Week 8

Independent Learning Week

Week 9

Mr. Fauzi explained about digital surrealism on week 9, he first explained about the difference between realism and surrealism.
  • Realism= the subjects used are what we always see in our daily lives. Realism favors the word "reality", so the subject is not extraordinary.
  • Surrealism= the subjects concentrate on dream images, and it usually manipulates reality.

Modern Art Movement:

1. Surrealism=
  • The inspirations behind surrealism art are they way the subconscious mind works and the dream images.
  • Surrealists artist example= Salvador Dalí
2. Dadaism=
  • Art works that are not natural in nature or rather a silly combination of a wide range of elements that is not realistic.
  •  Salvador Dalí is known for his dream-like artworks.

Digital Surrealism

Surrealism is a type of art where artist's can show their own ideas and one of the well-known type of digital art is digital surrealism.

How to Start Creating Surrealism Art:

Capture your idea or dream by sketching and finding references to elevate your idea.

A Mindset to Keep When Creating Surrealism Art:

1. "Does it look real?"
= It should look like it could be real. But no matter what, the artwork that is created is not real.

2. Make Your Artwork Using Your Best Abilities
= This can be a way to learn new skills set for the upcoming future projects.

PRACTICAL

We were assigned to make a poster with the concept of "QUOTES OF THE DAY". To begin with, I started looking and finding references to help me get an idea. Here are the references I worked with:
Figure 2.1 reference board 1 (10/11/2024, week 7)

For my first reference, I decided find references to get a idea on how I should go on about the concept and how I should start the project. So, I found some references that helped me generate some ideas.

Figure 2.2 poster reference (10/11/2024, week 7)

I decided to use the quote "LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES, DON'T REGRET THEM". So, I looked at some posters online, which are the posters above and used it as my reference.

Figure 2.3 reference board 1 (10/11/2024, week 7)

After settling on 3 ideas, I found some references that can help me execute the ideas just like how I visualized it. Here are my sketches:

Sketch 1

Figure 2.4 sketch 1 (11/11/2024, week 8)
Description=
I wanted to show a learning process, so I showcased the word "LEARN" into flipping pages of a book. The word "MISTAKES" is to show a closed book, meaning if the book is not opened then the mistakes can not be learned. I also added a graded "A" result exam paper, to better express the meaning of the quote I am leaning to. The clock is to show the time wasted if we wait any longer and for the word "DON'T", I added a stop sign to emphasize the word better. The word "THEM" is to show the list of regrets in the future.

Sketch 2

Figure 2.5 sketch 2 (11/11/2024, week 8)
Description=
For my second idea, I used a bookshelf as a reference and the amount of books on each shelf determines the knowledge. So for the words "LEARN FROM YOUR" the shelf is filled with books and to show the letters, I decided to incorporate the pattern of the book covers. For the rest of the words, there is less books on the shelf. It is because I wanted to show the feeling of regret and I also wanted to show the less knowledge that we can acquire, if we do not learn from our mistakes. So for the words "MISTAKES, DON'T REGRET THEM" I sketched it out as if it was a shadow inside the bookshelves.

Sketch 3

Figure 2.6 sketch 3 (11/11/2024, week 8)
Description=
The idea for the top layer of the poster is to show a success that we can achieve, if we learn from our mistakes. To show that, I decided to sketch a big business deal being made. For the words on the top layer, which is "LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES". I decided to make a power socket that is intertwining it's cable on each letter that is in their way to reach the light bulb on the letter "o" of the word "YOUR". The word "MISTAKES" is sketched as if it was a domino, so it is tumbling down since it is a mistake. The bottom layer however, shows a scene of regret from failing a test. The word "DON'T" has a stop sign as the letter "o", to better emphasize the word "DON'T" expression. The word "REGRET" has a background behind the word to make it stand out more.

ROUGH DIGITIZATION

I then continued to make a rough digitization from pictures I got online, just so that I could get an idea on how I should go on with digitalizing my own photographs. These are the images I took from the internet to help me make the rough digitization:

To make the rough digitization, I made use of the blur effect, adjustment layer, clip mask, etc. This is my rough digitization result:

When I started to digitize using my own photography, I noticed that my idea did not have much choices of placements I can work with. So, I came up with a new idea. Here are my references and sketch:

SKETCH

On my second idea, I decided to use the quote "IT'S NOW OR NEVER". I wanted my poster to portray a message, which is to motivate people to start achieving their dreams now rather than procrastinating. So, I decided to sketch two different activities. One of them is studying and the other is wasting their time by watching videos online. I also added the bookshelf as a background to show more educational value, the other reason is to incorporate an aspect of my first idea to this one. Which is placing the texts as if it was on the bookshelf.

I first started to make the rough digitization first, just so that I can get an idea on how to start digitizing my poster properly. These are the photos I took before moving it to Adobe.
Figure 2.11 photographs (24/11/2024, week 9)

I first started by editing and deleting the background of my photographs. For starters, I took both of my photos and moved it to Photoshop. Then I used the quick selection tool to roughly select the parts I wanted to keep. After that, I moved it to select and mask to further select the details in the photographs. I used both the refine edge brush tool and the brush tool in select and mask to help me select the details. I then applied the layer mask, and transferred it to the file where I will compile all my edited photographs in to make the poster.

I then did the same thing to my second photo of myself, using the same techniques and tools. After editing the second photo, I arranged the photos accordingly.
Figure 2.13 progress 2 (24/11/2024, week 9)

After I finished arranging the photos, I used the adjustment layer to color grade the photo of myself studying. After I was satisfied with the adjustments, I made it into a clipping mask. Right after that, I added the background. Then I made the bookshelf background blurred using the gaussian blur filter. For the final touches, I made the background black using the fill option.

With these techniques and tools that I used, I have made several attempts on Photoshop. Here are the attempts I made on Photoshop:

I also made several attempts on Illustrator to complete the poster design. Here are the attempts that I made before settling for the final poster.

FEEDBACK

Before I changed my idea, Mr. Fauzi approved of my second and third idea. After I changed my idea and quote, I showed my rough digitization and progress. Mr. Fauzi told me to keep the lighting of my second photo, because it was not needed. He also recommended me to incorporate the text aspects of my very first idea to the finalized idea I settled with.

REFLECTION

We were assigned to make a poster incorporating both typography and photography. During the making of this project, I have the opportunity to learn more about the basic tools in both Photoshop and Illustrator. I have come to a better understanding on some tools, though I still need a lot more practice. Though I did get a bit overwhelmed during the process, because of the amount of ideas I had. Throughout the process of making this poster, I have seen a lot of my peers work. We all had different techniques that we used to make our idea come together. I noticed that all of our ideas have their own unique feature. I also noticed that all of us had different ways to incorporate both photography and typography into 1 poster. From this assignment, I have learned the tools on both Illustrator and Photoshop better. But I think there is still room for improvement, so I will continue to learn more about the features and tools on Adobe.
