LECTURE

Color Theory
= the combination of the science and art when using colors. It shows how humans see colors, and the messages behind every color.

Difference between RGB & CMYK
Figure 1.1 RGB v CMYK (07/11/2024, week 7)

RGB= is the colors that is displayed on a computer screen
>It is made by mixing colors, such as: red, green, and blue variation of light sources
CMYK= are the colors for printing
>It is made by reductions of light

Hue, Shade, Tint, and Tone
Figure 1.2 hue, shade, tint, and tone (07/11/2024, week 7)
  • Hue= the most simple term of colors, it also indicates an object's color
  • Shade= a color that is mixed with the color black
  • Tint= a color that is mixed with the color white
  • Tone= a color that is mixed with the color grey\

Color Harmony
=designed so it is more efficient for the user's interpretation.
Figure 1.3 color harmony (07/11/2024, week 7)
  • Monochromatic= difficult to make mistakes on and makes a unpleasant color scheme
  • Analogous= the position of 3 colors on the color wheel being next to each other
  • Complementary= 2 colors that are located on the opposite sides of the color wheel, it makes designs pop. Though if it is overused it can get tiresome
  • Split-complementary= includes 3 colors, starting from 1 color and choosing the other 2 colors on the opposite side
  • Triadic= its dynamic and vibrant colors that are chosen evenly across the color wheel to create a visual contrast and a harmonious design

The Psychology of Color

Warm vs Cool
a difference between 2 sides of the color wheel
Figure 1.6 warm v cool (07/11/2024, week 7)

Warm colors= shows the feeling of happiness, optimism, and energy. It can also show a effect of precautions.

Cool colors= express calmness, sadness, and soothness. The mix of the color blue and red sparks creativity since its a combination of a warm and cool color

PRACTICAL

Double Exposure

Exercise 1
To start I watched the tutorial video first before starting the exercise. After watching the tutorial, I started by opening the portrait in photoshop first. Then I continued selecting the portrait using the magic wand tool and using the select subject option. To refine the details, I moved to the select and mask option. I used both the refine edge brush tool and the brush tool to refine the details. I selected the "New Layer with Layer Mask" option to output to. After refining the details, I made the background using a new layer and using solid color to fill it in.

Next, I adjusted the lighting of the portrait using the curves option in the adjustment menu. Which I made into a clipping mask. After I was satisfied with the lighting, I added the trees, adjusted the size, then I made it into a clipping mask too. Then I changed the background color to make it similar to the one in the trees image.

Then I used the brush tool to make the face appear, and also used the flow option to make it look more smooth. After I was satisfied with it, I copied the layer and turn it vertically using the free transform tool. Because of the spot that is left, I used the brush tool to erase it and used the flow option again to make it more pleasant on the eye.
Figure 2.1.3 step 3 ex.1 (07/11/2024, week 7)

After that, I made the trees and the curves layer become a clipping mask. Then, I added the birds and used the darken blending option to remove the background. Which I then adjusted accordingly. After the birds were in place, I added the clouds. I adjusted the cloud on the left, which I then copied for the cloud that is placed on the right. For the cloud on the right, I used the free transform tool to rotate it vertically. Then I adjusted its size.
Figure 2.1.4 step 4 ex.1 (07/11/2024, week 7)

For the final touches, I first grouped the clouds and made a adjustment layer with the levels option. Which I then made into a clipping mask, only then I adjusted the levels. Then I added a gradient map and reduced the opacity.

FINAL DOUBLE EXPOSURE, EXERCISE 1 RESULT

Exercise 2
To start, I collected the elements from the internet to make my double exposure self-image. These are the elements I took from Pinterest:
Figure 2.2.1 elements used ex.2 (07/11/2024, week 7)

These are the following links of the images above:
The first thing I did to start my double exposure self-portrait exercise is to make a new file with the size 1920x1080. Then I placed my photo, which I then selected using the magic wand tool with the help of the select subject option. After it was selected, I transferred it to the select and mask option so I can refine the details better. Which I outputted to the new layer with layer mask option. Since it is already refined, I placed the background image. But to make it easier to adjust, I reduced the opacity first and increased it after I was satisfied with the background placement.
Figure 2.2.2 step 1 ex.2 (07/11/2024, week 7)

After placing the background, I continued by adjusting the lighting of the portrait. To do so, I used the curves option in the adjustment menu. When I was already satisfied with the adjustment, I immediately made it into a clipping mask.
Figure 2.2.3 step 2 ex.2 (07/11/2024, week 7)

Next, I added trees and clipped masked it. Because I wanted the trees to be the shirt part, I reduced the opacity to erase the parts I didn't need using the brush tool. When I was satisfied with the result I increased the opacity back to normal.
Figure 2.2.4 step 3 ex.2 (07/11/2024, week 7)

The next element I wanted to add was the clouds, so I placed it just like how I envisioned it and used the free transform tool to adjust the clouds. After I placed it just like how I visualized it, I put the clouds into a group and clipped masked it. So, it stays in the area I wanted it to.
Figure 2.2.5 step 4 ex.2 (07/11/2024, week 7)

For the last finishing touches, I added some birds by removing the background and placing it in the center. I also adjusted the curves on my portrait, because I wanted the birds to be seen more clearly. Then I adjusted the hue/saturation on my background to make it more darker.
Figure 2.2.6 step 5 ex.2 (07/11/2024, week 7)

I also changed the birds by using the blending mode darken, because I liked how it looked better compared to when I removed the background automatically.

FINAL DOUBLE EXPOSURE, EXERCISE 2 RESULT
Figure 2.2.8 final double exposure ex.2 result (07/11/2024, week 7)

The idea behind my exercise 2 final result is basically about the lack of greenery there is in our planet earth. To be in detail, I made my self portrait the greenery that is lacking on our planet earth. So, my picture is looking at how terrible the pollution in the city is.

REFLECTION

This week's assignment was a bit challenging for me. We were told to make a double exposure art work that also requires us to brainstorm our own idea. For me, I didn't have a clear idea on what I was going to make. But, the idea I settled with suddenly occurred to me when I was practicing. Since we were given a tutorial on how to start the assignment, I watched it first then practiced it. That is because I wanted my final work to be as perfect as possible, so I practiced ahead of time. At first it was frustrating, because I couldn't get it just right. But as I practiced more, I got a better understanding and got more comfortable with the tools. Though throughout the time I practiced, I noticed that I have come up with more ideas while experimenting rather than just thinking about it beforehand. My new ideas seem to come up as I experiment, the more I practiced the more ideas I got. Now, I can understand new tools and different ways to use the tools I learned the previous weeks.
