TASK
Figure 1.1 The Starry Night (10/03/2025, week 6)
source
The chosen artwork that I chose
(Figure 1.1)
is The Starry Night that is painted by Vincent Van Gogh on the year
1889.

The references
(Figure 1.2)
I worked with to sketch the idea I chose.
Figure 1.3 chosen sketch (08/03/2025, week 5)
The sketch that I decided to develop (Figure 1.3) was emphasizing more on the inspiration that Vincent van Gogh got, which
was from the window of his asylum. But, I decided to change it into a more
homey and cozy setting. So I chose a home setting, with the view of The
Starry Night. The design principles that I used are Gestalt Theory, Law of Symmetry & Order that can be seen from the symmetrical "star
swirls" outside of the window and the second one is Repetition,
because of the pattern of the "star swirls".

Figure 1.6 poster first attempt without shadows (09/03/1015, week 5)
This was my finished design
(Figure 1.11)
with the new idea, using ibisPaint X to add more details to the ambience, glows to the stars, and shadows to the curtains. Though after the feedback that Ms. Jinchi gave me regarding my second attempt, I fixed it accordingly and I also decided to add more ambience to the room by giving it a much darker vibe on the sides. Just so that it looks like the stars are glowing and shining through the window.
In my opinion, the first attempt
(Figure 1.6)
that I made seems to lack variety and have no sense of creativity that
draws people in. It looks like I have no direction on how I should
develop the sketch. In addition, it does not look lively and does not
portray or convey the message I wanted to implement.
Figure 1.7 poster ideation (09/03/2025, week 5)
After the first attempt, I decided to roughly sketch
(Figure 1.7)
on the first attempt that I did to get a more clear direction. But after
the feedback Ms. Jinchi gave, I decided to do some more research on how
I can make the design better and develop it more.

After expanding my references
(Figure 1.8)
and some more research, I looked into more shapes of windows and how the
curtain flows. I decided to re-sketch my idea and develop it more.
Figure 1.9 developed sketch (10/03/2025, week 6)
After re-sketching
(Figure 1.9)
the developed idea on Adobe Illustrator, I decided to implement both
Ms. Jinchi's feedback on my first attempt and also some more
references. The significant changes that I made was on the shape of
the window, the placement of the bear, the added elements on the wall
and bookshelf, and lastly the flow of the curtains.

While I was creating the new idea, I have decided to change some
elements and experimented more on the shapes of the elements. Though I
used the same tools as I did when I created my first attempt.

FINAL ARTWORK TITLE
<Brenda Wynn_The Starry Story_Task 3>
The final design
(Figure 1.12)
that I finalized in went through much decision making on the different types
of shapes. Firstly, I decided whether or not to add the painting on the
wall. But in the end, I decided to discard it to make it less cramped. The
next decision I made was the element that I should include beside the bear,
because I intended to put some books. But, I had listened and read the
lyrics from the song "Vincent" by Don Mclean
[source]
that has a correlation with the painting The Starry Night and it gave me an
inspiration to put a ink bottle and a sheet of paper. The idea was to make
it look like it is writing a letter, which is what I interpreted from the
lyrics of the song. I also discarded the painting, because I thought it
looked to cramped. For the curtains, I have experimented with 3 different shapes of
curtains and settled on this final one. Lastly, the reason why I named this poster The Starry Story is because, it tells a story about the inspiration Van Gogh got to paint The Starry Night.
Through this design, I intend to show the viewers more about the backstory
of The Starry Night painting. Not only that, but also to show what Van Gogh
went through. My main purpose to convey that message is because I think that
many people might know the painting The Starry Night, but not many people
know the background story of it. So, with this design I hope to show more
people the backstory of the painting The Starry Night.
The design principles that I used to create this design is the
Gestalt Theory, Principle of Similarity. Which can be seen from the
blocky books and elements on the bookshelf and also circular method to draw
the stars or the view from the window. The second one is the
Asymmetrical Balance, that can be seen from the different weights of
some elements on each side of the design. The third one is Hierarchy,
that leads the viewers eyes from the main element which is the view outside
from the window to elements on top and on the bookshelf. The last one is
Harmony & Unity, which can be seen from the elements that complement
each other and gives a sense to the viewers about the room setting and also
the repetition of the books and also the circular-like shapes of the view.
FEEDBACK
Week 6
Ms. Jinchi told me to narrow the ceiling of my first attempt and recommended
me to put the teddy bear on top of the bookshelf rather than on the shelf to
avoid monotony. She also informed me to do some more research on the type of
window that I will use on my artwork to develop it more.
Week 7
Ms. Jinchi told me to make the window open wider and also to make the curtain flow farther.
