PROJECT

LALIN EDITING EXERCISE

For project 2 exercise, we were told to edit some video clips to somewhat imitate the original Lalin video. We were provided with the storyboard, video clips, sound effects, and the video to do this exercise. I started with editing the first storyboard, I compiled all the files and arranged all the video clips, text element, and sound effects. Then, I used a fade out effect on the text element to imitate the original video better. Lastly, I added the fade-in and fade-out effect on the beginning and the end of the video.

To start the second storyboard, I imported all the videos first and arranged it according to the story board. Following that, I placed the additional text element including the sound effect. After arranging the files, I added the effect on one of the shots. I used the cross dissolve effect to make the main subject disappear. Lastly, I added some fade in and fade out effect on the beginning and the end of the video.

PRODUCTION SHOOT EDITING

We were split into two groups and we were told to divide production tasks and shoot videos according to the storyboard and videos given.

Shooting Process

Figure 2.1 shooting process (28/05/2025, week 6)

After we finished shooting and compiled all the good takes, we were tasked to edit our own individual trailer. I decided to portray the story as if Waymond (male lead) was finding the truth about his wife after she betrayed him. Firstly, I made a storyboard as a guideline for my trailer is going to look like:

Then I proceeded editing the clips in Premiere Pro. I compiled all the needed sound effects, dialogue, image, and clips before editing.

I started by arranging and cutting all the clips first, then I added the music so that I can edit it better. After arranging the clips, I added the text using the Tahoma Bold font and for the title I used Times New Roman Bold font with red color. Then I added the needed sound effects and ended it by adding some ending transitions. For the audio files, I synced it manually to the videos.

"THE TRUTH" TRAILER BEFORE COLOR GRADING

COLOR CORRECTION AND COLOR GRADING (LALIN & TRAILER)

LALIN STORYBOARD 1
Figure 3.1 Lalin storyboard 1 color grading process (05/06/2025, week 7)

For the first storyboard, I implemented the Brownish / warm tone to show a more romantic feel to the video. Firstly, I added the adjustment layer for color grading and made it not visible. Then I started color correcting each clip and using some clips as reference to get the tone as similar as possible throughout the entire video. After I was satisfied with the color correction, I started color grading and made the adjustment layer visible.

LALIN STORYBOARD 2

Before I started the color correction and color grading, I prepared the adjustment layer for color grading first but I made it not visible. Then I started color correcting the clips, using the first clip as reference to make it as similar as possible. Then I made the adjustment layer visible and started color grading for the whole entire sequence. I aimed for a bluish color vibe for the video, just so that I could show a bit of a cold and sad feel to the video.

"THE TRUTH" TRAILER

Figure 3.3 "THE TRUTH" trailer color grading process (05/06/2025, week 7)

For the trailer, I implemented a teal & orange, bluish (cold), greenish (cold), brownish (warm), desaturation, 50%-70%, B & W, high contrast look on different clips. To begin, I first added the adjustment layer for color grading but I made it invisible first so I can color correct first. After that, I started color correcting each clip aiming to refine the vibe and overall visuals of the video. Then, I used the razor tool to cut the adjustment layer and removed the cut layers that overlayed the text. Lastly, I made my adjustment layer visible and adjusted it differently according to each of the clips look to add the final touches and overall vibe of my trailer. I utilized the basic correction, creative, curves section, etc to color correct and grade my trailer.

FEEDBACK

Week 7

The Lalin storyboard 2 needs more contrast on the color grading and the background of one of the clips needs to be more visible. For the trailer, the trailer structure is good and just needs to be color graded.

REFLECTION

On project 2, we were told to edit some provided clips that refers to the "Lalin" video. There were two storyboards provided, so I decided to make both storyboards into actual videos. When editing, I had a lot of fun combining the clips, adding sound effects, making use of video effect, etc. I was always fond of editing, so in general I had a lot of fun editing the "Lalin" videos. But then, when it came to color correction and color grading, I was actually a bit frustrated and confused since I was new to the new tools. Eventually, after getting things straight and gotten a better understanding of the tools used to do color correction and grading. I decided to try two different types of color grading on my "Lalin" videos, just so that I can experiment about color grading more. It was still a bit frustrating when I had to match every clip into a similar tone, but I was very happy with the end result. After the "Lalin" videos, we were tasked to make a trailer from the clips we shot. I was the director and it was so much fun when me and my group members was shooting, it felt like the real thing but smaller. When it came to edit, at first I was a bit confused on how I want my trailer to be like. I experimented a bit, but eventually I had a ton of fun when I got the groove and idea on how I want my trailer to look like.

When I was completing both projects, I noticed that I thrive better in editing when I actually start experimenting with the clips and audios. The reason being could be because I tried visualizing and drawing how the video is going to look like. Though visualizing did help and provide me with the foundation of it, so it is quite helpful at the start. However, even though I did notice that I can edit pretty smoothly so far, I missed a lot of details. Because I realized that every time I finished editing and exported the final result. There will always be a tiny mistake that I missed, which is inefficient since I have to export the video again. Though, I will try to be more aware of the tiny details while editing to improve my efficiency and skills in editing. I also watched a few of my peers work and even though we were all provided with almost the similar content to edit, we all had our own unique way of conveying our message.

In this project, I learnt a lot of new skills and tools when editing in Premiere Pro. I have also come to appreciate the work that actually goes in shooting and editing, especially film makers. I had a lot of fun making these projects, and I was able to learn much more about myself. I learnt that I was considerably quick in editing, but I lack attention to detail which leads to inefficiency. Though, now I will try to spend more time and pay attention more to the details when editing to improve my skills.
