TASK

Week 1
We were told to create a group for the group task which requires us to create a tabletop game. This is my group and the team members:
  • Madeline Ordelia Tjahjadi (0376920) > Leader
  • Brenda Wynn (0372128)
  • Carren Yeliandi (0376990)
  • Cindy Noverin (0376409)
  • Michelle (0373843)

We were also given the chance to play some tabletop games before moving on to the ideation stage of our tabletop game. We chose to play Scramble where we had to create words with the letters we have.

Week 2
On this week, we discussed and compiled some ideas. In the end, we came up with 3 ideas:

1. Ludo: Clash of Colors

2. Storytelling Game

3. Crafting Game

We showed our ideas to Ms. Anis and she recommended us to develop the first idea.

Week 3
During this week, Ms. Anis told us to go to a board game cafe to do some research and play some other tabletop games so that we can know what we need to improve on while developing our game. We played games like Catan, Werewolf, Cluedo, etc. Based on the games we played, we found that a game can be confusing to understand, making us unable to play the game. We also realized that too much components are confusing.

After we went to the board game cafe, we started to develop our low-fidelity prototype to test the rules and gameplay we set up. Then, we tried playing our game to see if there are any adjustments need to be made. We found that we should set a time that would estimate how long the game is going to be since it took us a while to complete the game. We also decided to simplify the rules we set.

Week 4
Once we tested and revised the rules a bit, we started creating the high-fidelity prototype. The pawns we used before was not sturdy so we mainly focused on increasing the quality.


Week 5

We also discussed to change some of the rules and created the PPT to present to Ms. Anis.

Week 6
On this week. we presented our game to Ms. Anis and she said that our game was well-developed. After the presentation, we played the game between the group members to see if there are any adjustments that needs to be made. We found that we should balance out the powers we give to each colors so there are no biases. We also decided to revise the rules a bit more since we keep encountering confusions.

Week 7
This week, our game was tested out by other groups. I became the designated game master that will observe and help the new players play and test our game. During the game session, they were mostly confused throughout the game and it made them unable to think strategically which led them to forget to use their pawn's powers. In addition, the power cards made them even more confused due to the different scenarios that they faced.

Week 8
During this week, me and my group have revised some of our game components.
1. Added an explanation on action cards;

2. Elaborated the instructions more;

3. Added game tokens to remind players to use their power and keep track of their power usage.

With these adjustments, we tested our game with another group this week. I was also the game master on this testing session. Through this session, I found that most of them did not know how to play the original Ludo game. The main problem that occurred was the time, it took too long for them to finish the game which started to make the game boring.

After the other group finished playing with our tabletop game, me and my teammates played theirs.
Overall, their game was really fun and new. It was just that the game time was too short, it ended too fast.

Week 9
After the test last week regarding our game, we discusses and revised some of our game components:
  1. Removed the tokens since the game ended up having too many components;
  2. Finalized the rules/instructions book after adding more elaboration about the game;
  3. Finalized all the game components.

Week 10
We have finished the physical prototype of our game and we just needed to add to our presentation slides.

Week 11
On week 11, we did one more playtest to finalize our tabletop game before the final playtest with new players. From the playtest feedback we revised some things:
  • Minor changes on the rules since it solely depends on the players agreement/the player since creating rules does not give players the flexibility;
  • Made use of elemental cards to keep track of the players powers.

Week 12
We had our last playtest with new players this week. I was not the game master and played another group's game. It was a game related to mining and it was quite fun. But based on the feedback that my teammate acquired, we did not need change anything anymore about our game and submitted the physical prototype.

Week 13
This week, we focused on preparing for the final presentation and added the new data we have gotten from the playtest to the PPT.


Week 14
On this week. we recorded our final presentation.


FEEDBACK

Week 2
Ms. Anis recommended that we develop our first idea which is the Ludo: Clash of Colors game.

Week 4
Ms. Anis tried playing our game and suggested that we add a new game component or change a rule since the game took too long.

Week 6
Ms. Anis said our game is well-develop and told us to continue on the development.

Week 7
Finished a playtest with other groups, feedbacks can be seen in this Google doc.

Week 8
Ms. Anis said our game rules and mechanics are much clearer now.

REFLECTION

Through this entire semester, this module involved many games which I liked since I am a big fan of playing games. I liked that this module gave me a chance to play many new tabletop games, it made me gain a wider perspectives and a wider range of the different tabletop there is. I might not be able to play all the tabletop games that are available, but the process of playing the game itself to do our research was very fun. I also liked how this module require us to create a tabletop game ourselves. I liked creating all the different components of the game and seeing how our game develops through time. This module made me appreciate the research part of creating a game, since it allows us to learn just like how a game have educational values that players can learn naturally. I have learnt many things about tabletop games, game principles, game developments, etc.
