LECTURE

Lasso tool
= Used to draw and pinpoint selected areas.

There are 3 types of tool options, they are=
  • Lasso
  • Polygonal lasso
  • Magnetic lasso

Pen tool
= Used to make a path from scratch. To put it simply, the pen tool is used to make points that determines how the shape will look. The less points, the better. It can be used to make precise shapes and paths.

Types of pen tools:
  1. Simple S curves
  2. U shaped curves
  3. Complex S curves
  4. Straight line paths

Layering
= Layers of images overlaying each other. You can make adjustments on each layer without effecting other layers. One of the biggest advantage is that when you use layers you can't destroy the original image.

PRACTICAL

After watching the tutorial carefully, I decided to move to photoshop and start editing from the easiest to hardest objects in my opinion. To start, I first selected the buildings. I wanted to use the blue building so I used the pen tool to select the building. Then, I clicked the "Ctrl" button to select the actual part I selected using the pen tool. With the selected building element, I moved it to the canvas to start making the composition.

When I got more comfortable with using the pen tool, I used it to select the lady on one of the given images. I wanted to use the lady as one of my elements in my composition. To do so, I used the pen tool to select the part I wanted to use. But since it was a more complex shape, I dragged the pen tool to make some arched lines so I can trace it better. After tracing it and selecting it like before, I transferred it to the canvas as one of my elements.

Lastly, I used the magic wand to select the elements I wanted to use. I tried this tool on the blue fish first, because it looks less intimidating than the others. So, I basically selected the background which I will not be using and deleted it. But, I selected it on a copy of the original background image. Which I then transferred to the canvas.

After obtaining all the elements I wanted to use, I arranged some compositions and these are the ones I settled with:

COMPOSITION 1

Figure 2.4 composition 1 (12/10/2024, week 3)

The story behind my first composition is to make the fish look like its towering the buildings. So it looks like the sky which is textured, be the "water" section of where the fish will swim through. Then, the buildings will act as the ground. I also added a moon on the top right, to make it look as realistic as a city.

COMPOSITION 2

Figure 2.5 composition 2 (12/10/2024, week 3)

The second composition I made, I incorporated the golden ratio rule. So, the viewers will see the fish on the top right first which is leading the viewers to see the next fish which is located on the mid-bottom left section. I added a machine on the eye so the viewers will pay attention to the other fish first. Then, it will end on the boy who is heading inside the building.

COMPOSITION 3

Figure 2.6 composition 3 (12/10/2024, week 3)

The last composition I chose, I decided to settle with the idea of the typewriter typing what it wants to appear. So, the main idea is that the typewriter is typing anything it wants to and it will come out of the typewriter. In this specific case, fishes, buildings, peoples, etc appears.

REFLECTION

At the start, I was not encouraged because I know so little about photoshop. But, I have seen the tutorial that Mr. Fauzi gave during class and it was very helpful. Now, I know how to use the magic wand and the pen tool better. Along with the other features that might be helpful for the future. From the tutorial and the task given, I have a better understanding on how to operate photoshop. Though during the exercise, I came into an art block. Since, I was a bit unfamiliar with making digital collages. I was a bit disheartened, but I pushed through and made a few collages. In the end, I chose 3 compositions that I think is best. Even though I can learn about the features in a steady pace, I can't help but to lack creativity. Because I was not used to digital art, I find it difficult to express my creativity better. So, I will practice more on photoshop to get better at managing and operating the software. That way, I can express and explore my creativity even wider.
