LECTURE
This week, we learned about poster design. To begin, we were told that these 7
design principles are compulsory for designers to follow, so they can create a
effective and attractive composition. These are the 7 principles:
- Emphasis
- Balance and Alignment
- Contrast
- Repetition
- Proportion
- Movement
- White Space
Here are a some explanations and a much more thorough explanation:
1. Emphasis
= a element that stands out or a element that caught
the viewers eye first.
2. Balance and Alignment
= a structured arrangement of both space and place of
each elements to show a relation between elements.
3. Contrast
= creates space & differentiate elements
in a design. To make the design elements and background
complement each other, the color needs to be distinctly
different between the background and the elements.
4. Repetition
= set a limit to your typefaces choices to 2 and the colors
to 3 to create a solid design.
5. Proportion
= the elements visual size & weight in a design,
following on how they correlate with each other.
6. Movement
= a well-arranged composition that can guide the viewers
eye from one element to another, while showcasing the information behind the
composition clearly to the viewers.
7. White Space
= an empty space that surrounds the elements of a
composition.
Here are an example of a poster for each principle:
Figure 1.1 design principles example (30/10/2024, week 6)
Though a designer doesn't have to follow these principles to create a
remarkable design. Some designers overlook these few principles to create a
eye-catching design. Here is a example of a poster design that doesn't
follow these exact principles:

PRACTICAL
RECOLORING BLACK & WHITE
Exercise 1
The first exercise, we were assigned to recolor a black & white picture
provided. This was to help us master the fundamentals, before learning the
much more complex method to recolor black and white pictures. To do this
exercise, I first started by watching the tutorial videos provided. I also
learned from the tutorial Mr. Fauzi did during class. After watching the
tutorial videos, I started to recolor the skin first. I used the soft light
option to blend the color and toned down the opacity a bit. I also used the
hue/saturation option to make the color look more lively.

Figure 3.1.2 step 2 ex.1 (30/10/2024, week 6)
Following that, I started coloring the hair and used the soft light option
to blend the color. After the color was blended, I figured that it was too
bright and vibrant so I decreased the opacity a bit. For the coat, I used a
green color and blended it using the soft light option. I also toned down
the opacity and adjusted the color using the hue/saturation option.
Figure 3.1.3 step 3 ex.1 (30/10/2024, week 6)
The last segment I needed to color was the wall, I used the quick selection
tool to select the wall. Which I then transformed, into a layer mask. I also
used the fill feature to color the background and blended it using the soft
light option. In order for it to look less vibrant for the wall, I reduced
the opacity.

Exercise 2
The second exercise we were told to do requires us to make a small color
palette from a colored image, which will be used to color the black &
white image. Knowing that, I practiced on photoshop while following the
tutorial video provided. To begin with, I started making the color palettes
from both given images to color the hair and skin.
Figure 3.2.1 step 1 ex.2 (30/10/2024, week 6)
After making the color palettes, I started recoloring the hair first. I used
the quick selection tool to select the hair. Then I used the select and mask
option to select the unselected hair strands because the hair of the image
was very wavy. Then I colored it according to the color palette I made
earlier with the help of the solid color option. To make it look more
natural, I used the soft light option to blend the colors.
Figure 3.2.2 step 2 ex.2 (30/10/2024, week 6)
When I was already satisfied with the color of the hair, I started to
recolor the skin. I used the same method as I did while recoloring the hair.
Which starts by selecting the part with the quick selection tool, then
moving it in the select and mask option. Then colored it using the color
palette I made earlier, but I used overlay to blend the color instead. To
make it look realistic, I adjusted the opacity and the hue/saturation
setting.
Figure 3.2.3 step 3 ex.2 (30/10/2024, week 6)
Following that, I colored the background next. For the wall, I also used
the quick selection tool and the select and mask option to recolor it.
However, I did not blend it or tone down the opacity. I just made sure
that the details that is in the hair got selected.
Figure 3.2.4 step 4 ex.2 (30/10/2024, week 6)
Before I start on the small parts, I recolored the fur first using the
same method. After selecting and coloring the image, I used soft light to
blend the colors in.
Figure 3.2.5 step 5 ex.2 (30/10/2024, week 6)
For the final details, I continued to recolor the lips, earring, teeth,
and the eyes. For these few features, I colored it first and adjusted the
blending modes just like the first exercise. Though I also adjusted the
opacity on a few of the face features.

Exercise 2, PT 2
The final exercise that we were assigned to do requires us to use the
knowledge we got from the last 2 exercises and incorporate it to recolor the
image of our choice. I chose to recolor the image of Harry Styles. To start, I first started from getting an image from the internet as a base color palette I can adjust later on. After getting the color palette sorted, I started to recolor the hair first. Just like the other exercises, I selected the hair with the quick selection tool first. Which I then transferred to the select and mask option. Then I edited it right away so the hair strands got selected with the tool. Following that I adjusted the color according to my liking and blended it using the overlay option.

I first selected the face, neck, and chest, which I then transferred to the select and mask option to select the part more in detail. Then I started to recolor it while I adjusted some parts on the select and mask option. When I was already satisfied by the selection parts, I used the overlay option to blend the color.
Figure 3.3.2 step 2 ex.2 pt2 (30/10/2024, week 6)
Then I started on the lips, I first colored the lips using the brush tool, which I then blended using the overlay option. Because it was too vibrant, I reduced the opacity a bit. But, I found that the coloring can look a bit more cleaner so I transferred it to the select and mask option and adjusted some parts using the refine edge brush tool.
Figure 3.3.3 step 3 ex.2 pt2 (30/10/2024, week 6)
After recoloring the lips, I recolored the jacket with the same method which is selecting the jacket using the quick selection tool. Then transferring it to the select and mask option to make the part I selected much clearer. Next, I used the solid color option to color the jacket and then I used the soft light option to blend it in. In addition, I erased the colors on the logo of the jacket to add a bit of detailing on the jacket.
Figure 3.3.4 step 4 ex.2 pt2 (30/10/2024, week 6)
I used the quick selection tool to select the background. Which I then transferred to the select and mask option to refine the outline of the wall. Then I finished it up by coloring the selected area, blending it with the overlay option and reducing the opacity a bit.

REFLECTION
To be honest, when we were given these exercises. I was a bit anxious to
do it, because I didn't know if I could do it as well as my expectations.
But, with the help of the tutorial videos that were provided, which has
thoroughly explained how to recolor the images properly and the tutorial
that Mr. Fauzi has also explained before we started the exercises was very
helpful. I was stunned at first, because I was not at all familiar with
photoshop. But, these exercises has helped me master photoshop better. In
addition, it was a very interesting and fun exercise that I got to do.
Though, during the making of the exercise I found that it was very
interesting and I got to learn very fast about how to recolor the images.
I was surprised that I was able to follow such a detail oriented method. I
also found out that I can quickly pick up the methods just by watching the
tutorials and practicing it in photoshop consecutively. During the making of the exercises that were given, I found that the
method to recolor a black & white image was very detail oriented. I
figured that it takes a lot of patience and attention to detail to make a
good recoloring of a black & white image.
