PROJECT 1
INSTRUCTABLE INFOGRAPHICS POSTER
We were told to create a Instructable Infographic Poster of a recipe from
Pasta grannies YouTube channel. I chose Nonna Nella's recipe where she made
Tagliatelle with Courgettes and Courgette Flowers.
This is the script that I compiled from the video above
After watching and analyzing both the video and script, I gathered some
references on how I want the poster to look like and what art direction that
I will be using to create the poster. These are the references I used:
I also created a color palette, so that it is more aligned to the recipe and
pasta itself. This is the color palette that I will be using:
Once I analyzed the references, I started sketching to give me a bit of
guidance on how the poster will turn out to look like. These are the
sketches I created:
I asked Mr. Martin for some feedback regarding the sketches and he
recommended me to continue using the sketch on the left. Then, I started to
gather some references for the visual of the ingredients.
I used the references I gathered to sketch how the ingredients will look
like visually before starting to draw it digitally.
Once all the resources I needed was gathered, I started to create the
poster. First, I created the ingredients. To create the ingredients, I
mostly used the blob brush tool, pathfinder, and the smooth tool.
FINAL POSTER
ANIMATED INSTRUCTABLE POSTER
We were tasked to create an animation on one of the Pasta Grannies recipe.
We were given the choice to work individually or in pairs, I decided to work
in pairs with Cindy. We also decided to do the animation based of Cindy's
chosen Pasta Grannies recipe. After deciding the recipe, we agreed to create
a storyboard each and develop it from there. To make it easier to draw the
storyboard, I made the script from the video and divided it into chunks.
This is the script I made:
These are the references I watched before drawing the storyboard:

This is the storyboard I made for the animation:
After getting feedback from Mr. Martin, he recommended that we use the
storyboard that I made and develop it. He also told us to create a timeline
on how the animation will fit in 1 minute. This is the timeline we decided
on:
I also created a short and simple animation to show how the animation will
play out later. This is the short animation sample I made:
After we confirmed the direction of our animation with Mr. Martin, we decided
on a color palette. This is the color palette we settled with:
These are the references I used from the internet and the recipe video to create the visuals in Illustrator:
Once we finished preparing the sketches and references, we decided to create
30 seconds of the animation each and combine it once we finished with our
parts. I chose to complete the last 30 seconds of the animation. To do so, I
created the graphics in Illustrator first. To start, I used the blob brush
tool and smooth tool mainly to create the pot and the gnocchi shape. Then, I
used the eye dropper tool to choose a color from the reference I used.
After creating the foundational shape of the visuals I needed, I started
adding the details and shadows to define the visuals. I also experimented
with lots of colors that will look similar to the original ingredients. In
addition, I created a few of the elements in different colors since there is
a cooking part in the animation.
As the finishing touch, I started to group the elements that will be
together so that it will be easier to animate later on.
After reviewing the elements that is finished, I decided to add a few more
details and components, so that the animation can clearly convey the recipe
steps.
Once all the components are finished, I separated it into layers and
imported it to After Effects.
In After Effects, I divided the composition into 3 to make it more
organized. In the composition I used the Title/Action Safe grid to make the
animation look a bit more organized. I animated the first few seconds first
and the transition before the next shot, mainly using the position tool in
the transform panel and anchor tool.
In the second shot, I incorporated different angles and mostly used the
scale tool in the transform panel to create the right effect.
On the third shot, it has more content in it so I started to refine the
actions a bit more.
Lastly, I used the position and scale tool to refine the last few seconds a
bit more and compiled all the shots into one composition. Once the animation
was finished, I started to finish it up by adding the sound effects. I also
managed the amount of noise each sound effect has to make the animation look
more in harmony. In addition, I used easy ease and motion blur on most of
the components to make it more smooth.
INDIVIDUAL ANIMATION PART
FINAL COMBINED ANIMATION
REFLECTION
For the time that was spent to create the Pasta Grannies poster, it was
actually quite fun. I really liked the concept and process. I have also seen
some of my peers works and we all seem to have a different concept ideas. It
was really interesting to see my peers works. However, throughout the period
of creating the poster, I realized that I have became a bit more comfortable
and proficient when using the Illustrator software.
In the process of making the animation, I actually had a lot of fun. I liked the idea and progress that we can see during the animating process so the overall experience of learning and creating the animation to me was very enjoyable. I seen some of my peers work and it's fun to see the differences in animating style, including the drawing style. In this project, I have refined my skills in editing using After Effects and learnt how to animate using motion graphics.
