EXERCISE 1

We were tasked to create a Smart Assistant avatar in Adobe Animate utilizing the drawing tools. For this task, I decided to draw and reference from a homing pigeon since they are good at navigating their way back home despite their long distance from home. The reason I chose the pigeon is because Smart Assistants can be mainly used to navigate users to their desired page destination. Before sketching, I gathered some references.

Here are my sketches:

After I showed the sketch below to Mr. Shamsul, he said that I could explore more to make the avatar look more interesting.

Based on the feedback I received, I decided to explore more on what I can add to make the avatar look more interesting. These are the references I used:

Once I have gotten an idea, I started sketching on the developed version. Here are the sketches I made:

After finalizing which design I wanted, I started creating my avatar in Adobe Animate. This is the sketch I decided to use:

To start, I imported the sketch to the software first. Then, I started on creating the avatar based on the sketch. I mainly utilized the line tool to create the overall shape and fill tool for the color. I also used the Break Apart command and grouped the avatar features while creating the avatar to create a more organized work space. Lastly, I tested different color palettes to see which suits the avatar best and what can give it more depth.

This is the final look of the first version:

In class, I showed the first version to Mr. Shamsul, he recommended that I add a few more accessories that can complete the character and make it look more interesting. He also pointed out that I should also think about what move will the avatar have when animating later.

After the feedback, I decided to look into more references to decide which other accessories suit the avatar. Here are the references I used:

Once I decided on the accessory I wanted to add and the animation that I want to do, I started adding the features to the avatar. I decided to add a topper hat and make the animation where the pigeon avatar "Albert" coo. I tested different angles and designs for the topper hat, including the color choice. I also drew 3 new movements on the beak for the animation.

This is the final results:

FEEDBACK

Week 4
The smart UI sketch can look more interesting and it's better to include the whole body of the character.

Week 5
The character looks good but lacks something interesting that can captivate users. Could add a hat or other accessories to make it more interesting. In addition, it's better to make the character while considering how it could be animated later.

REFLECTION

Based on this exercise, I have tried and learned a new software. I have also trained and practiced my skills in the software for a more swift use. It was really fun to learn a new software and how to do simple animations. During the period of this exercise, I have gotten the chance to look at my peers avatars. I noticed that there is a significant difference in our design choices, some opted for cute avatars, others designed for cool or cute robots, and many chooses to reference based on animals. This exercise has really made me get out of my comfort zone in learning new things. It also made me gain new skills in a new software which I will develop towards the future.
