LECTURE
This week we learned about basic compositions, rule of thirds and golden
ratio. To put it simply, basic composition consist of focal point, scale &
hierarchy, balancing the elements, and white space. The rule of thirds is a
process to divide an image into thirds, creating a imaginary grid with 9 parts
and 4 intersection points. Lastly, golden ratio is commonly found in nature
settings, when it is used in a design it will look naturally pleasing in the
eye. We also studied different types of framing, such as: singles, two shots,
three shot, over the shoulder, point of view, and insert shot.
PRACTICAL
PHYSICAL COLLAGE COMPOSITION
Step by step=
Figure 2.1 step by step (30/09/2024, week 2)
Step 1= I picked out some main pieces and backgrounds to brainstorm the idea I
want to make.
Step 2= I cut out my main
pieces needed.
Step 3= I continued cutting out the other materials needed for all 3
designs.
Step 4= After cutting out the materials needed for the pieces, I separated
them and grouped them according to each design pieces.
I created 3 different arrangements for each concepts and picked the best one
out of each of them. Here are the different arrangements I made:
Figure 2.2 collage arrangements (30/09/2024, week 2)
These are the 3 collage designs I settled with:
1. Collage 1

Figure 2.3 collage 1 (30/09/2024, week 2)
For this specific design, I chose to use the rule of thirds to
assemble the piece. I used a plain background for the part of the
piece that is much busier, and used the other side of the background
that is filled with words for the less busier side. The concept is
fashion based, so the model is posing with a dress filled with what
you normally see in a fashion show or a runway.
2. Collage 2
Figure 2.4 collage 2 (30/09/2024, week 2)
For this piece, I also used the rule of thirds. I incorporated the
pose of the man in the background was doing to make my piece
alive. The idea behind this collage is that the man's eye was
where the fish and other sea creatures or plants appear.
3. Collage 3
Figure 2.5 collage 3 (30/09/2024, week 2)
My last piece was made in a very modern and simple way in my
opinion compared to the other two. The concept behind is
basically about online shopping, fashion, jewelries. Basically,
its things that you would find while surfing the internet. The
background is just a simple sheet of paper, layered with some
newspaper on each side. In this piece, I also used the rule of
thirds to arrange it.
FINAL COLLAGE COMPOSITION
This is the final collage design that Mr. Fauzi chose out of the
3 designs I provided:
We also attended the mural competition on week 2 (06/10/2024).
During the day of the competition, we went to Atrium, The Starhill by car to
attend the competition. As soon as we arrived, we quickly went to the
assigned place of the competition. After arriving, we immediately took our
seats and listened to the briefing. Right after the briefing, we took our
place and set up our equipment. When the competition started, we sketched it
right away. After sketching, we started coloring our elements and
background. We also got to see the gallery that is close by where the
competition is being held on. We also got to see our rivals works, and they
were excellent. Unfortunately, me and my team didn't win. Maybe we will win
in another competition, someday.
For more details, check this blog. Made to focus on the day of the
competition and the competition itself.
FEEDBACK
Mr. Fauzi chose the second and third composition. But, he recommended me to
choose the second collage composition for the final submission, because it
is much more colorful.
REFLECTION
From what I learned from the lecture this week about the rule of thirds, golden ratio, compositions, etc. I realized that to take a good photograph or to make a good composition requires such a complex method. It has occurred to me that if you follow these basic rules, it can really make a big difference. I also had a both confusing and fun experience while making the collages. I was amazed by the difference when you make a collage by following the rules and when you don't.
